Gianni Mazzocchi Award

Takeshi Uchiyamada, Chairman of the Board of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), has been awarded the “Gianni Mazzocchi” award in recognition of his role in the development and expansion of hybrid technology.

The award, which originated in 2011, and recognises outstanding contributions from the automotive industry, was presented to the Toyota Chairman in Milan at the annual Quattroruote (Italian car magazine) awards by Giovanna Mazzocchi Bordone, President of the Editoriale Domus group and Carlo Cavicchi, Director of Quattroruote.

After holding various positions within TMC since 1969, the experienced engineer Takeshi Uchiyamada was assigned the role of project leader in 1993 of “Project G21” or “Global 21st Standard.”

He would go on to lead a team which had the sole aim of developing a new car for the 21st century. They would overcome many technical challenges and concerns, but it would result in a car that would forever change the world of transport.

The fruits of his labour would be seen in 1997 with the launch of Toyota’s first hybrid, the pioneering Prius, which has now grown today to a family of 25 hybrid models globally, with 15 new models due for release in 2015.

To see how far the technology has come you only have to look at its inclusion in top tier motorsport. As a hugely competitive test bed for future hybrid development, Toyota has participated in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with hybrid since 2012, and after a successful campaign in 2013, with five wins, are looking forward to another year’s participation in 2014, with the TS040 HYBRID.

With recent news of Toyota reaching the milestones of six million hybrid sales globally and producing 10 million cars annually, the award celebrating Takeshi Uchiyamada’s achievements, comes at a perfect time with hybrid sales at their highest and plans for Toyota’s first production ready hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle in 2015.
