Toyota FT-1 Concept

Daring Toyota Sports Car Concept debuts at 2014 Detroit Show

The Toyota FT-1 Concept made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 13th. It is a design study that signals the direction of Toyota’s future sports car designs.

A team at Calty Design Research, Toyota’s design centre in California, channelled their passion into the vehicle as they retraced Toyota’s sports car heritage to create the ultimate future super car.

The FT-1’s front engine rear-wheel drive configuration locates the cockpit relatively far back, to improve weight distribution. This also gives it classic sportscar proportions. The wrap-around windscreen and side window openings are a distinct nod to that first Toyota supercar, the 1967 GT2000.

The design language portrayed by the FT-1 is destined specifically for future sports cars from Toyota, but the process that led to this concept will have a much wider impact.

Traditionally, Toyota’s design decisions have been driven by consensus among a large group of stakeholders. But as part of a companywide movement to invigorate Toyota products with more energy and passion, the process has been streamlined and the FT-1 is the first concept to benefit. Fewer parties are involved now, leading to a bolder and purer design expression. Watch this space!
